Too Far Left??

I had an incredibly interesting drive today with my brother - my conservative brother.  I was shocked when he brought up my ramblings on this blog - he actually read it - well at least as much as he could stomach.  My brother(s) thinks I am an extremist ( the rest of my family just thinks I'm nuts)(wish he would have said Radical).  No extremist - he compared me to - get this - GLEN BECK! (just the left-sided GB.)  And no - we did not run off the road, I did not push him out of the car, I did not pull his seat belt so tight that he turned crimson - I behaved.  He went on to say that liberals were not ' accepting of others' - conservatives were much more accepting and listened to other viewpoints.  Hhmm, that was sure evidenced in the speech the other nite when Cantor was texting, Shimkus walked out and Wilson yelled "you lie", when Palin continues to harp about death panels. I am trying to shine the headlights on an example when conservatives at any time are more accepting to any one person or any idea.  If anyone has examples of conservatives being more accepting - please comment - I am eager to learn where they excel.  Oh maybe its in their treatment of the gay population - oops - no not that area, maybe its in their past leaders - Bush, Cheney, Rummy - no not there either.  Wait, wait - maybe its in their desire to get healthcare for EVERY single person because its the MORAL thing to do - no - that's the lefties.  Hmmm. . .
I admit, I am biased.  I think most people that drive on the left actually think for themselves.  They don't seem to 'follow the leader'  (and I'm using the term leader loosely) like the right follows Rush, Beck, O'Reilly and Holmes.  Now I really, really have a crush on Obama - but I don't follow him blindly.  Example: if we don't have a public option - the love affair will dwindle.  When I watch Keith - I do so with a grain of salt.  I must say his special comments sometimes make me want to yell 'shut the hell up'.  Rachel - I always agree with.  Bill Maher sometimes he makes me cringe.
So - - am I the left-side version of Glenn Beck??  (Careful folks, I'm behind the wheel.) I honestly don't think so.  My fellow liberals are the most accepting group that I know.  Most of them don't just talk about driving down the highway - they actually travel down the road and try to do justice along the way.

Most right wingers that I know, believe as your brother does. They've been taught by their leaders (Rush, et al) that they're the victims. No matter what we lefties do or say, we're abusing them. One of the more blatant episodes of this was the National Press' mistreatment of Gov Palin. The fact that she was an uninformed idiot did not play into the equation at all. Now I'm ranting.

interesting. I am a centrist with some pretty "radical" rightist views and also some pretty left leaning ones. I enjoy your thought process. Don't agree with a whole lot though.

The brother here...just catching up on missed blog entry's. Obviously, I need to start reading this more often...especially after any conversations with my sister.

Now for a minor clarification: I referred to my sister as an extremist because she promotes an "us-them" platform...or to conform to her theme...an "it's my way or the highway" platform. My point was, simply put, historically that's what extremists do...right and left...they promote a one-sided position that leaves no room for discussion.

It's not about who is more this or more that...let's stop lobbing word grenades at each other and threatening to run over people with other views and work towards unity instead. How about this...ignore the idiots on the extreme (there are plenty on both sides) and focus on the issues. Let's talk about the facts and try to resolve...or at least accept our differences. And if you really want to make a difference, start by treating everyone with love and respect...even those who hold different opinions from yours...won't that blow some minds!

By the way...referring to one of the other comments...I'm a righty and, out of all my friends and acquaintances, I only know one person that listens to "Rush et al". Most of us recognize them for what they are...and we certainly don't sit around talking about them and their shows. Honestly, I don't even know who most of those people are but I can say this ...they aren't my leaders or my teachers.
